WATCH: Alianza Lima turn the lights out on Universitario

Universitario’s Monumental Stadium where the trophy will be presented

Alianza Lima have been criticised for a remarkable act of pettiness after rivals Universitario clinched the Peruvian League title last night.

Universitario claimed a 2-0 win at Alianza’s Alejandro Villanueva stadium, better known as Matute, to complete a 3-1 aggregate triumph in the final of the domestic Clausura competition.

At the final whistle, rather than watch the victors enjoy their success, the home club switched off the floodlights, leaving the bemused Universitario players to celebrate in the dark.

Jefferson Farfan, one of Alianza’s most famous former players, was not impressed.

He wrote on Instagram: “You have to know how to lose. Congratulations to Universitario.

“To the team of my heart, you have to play with clenched teeth. You can lose, but you have to score. Congratulations ‘Orejas’, I’m very happy for you. Fair winners.”

Due to the blackout, Universitario were not awarded the trophy last night. It is believed they will instead hold a special ceremony this weekend at their Monumental Stadium.
