‘He’s as good as it gets’ – Bosa unsurprised as 49ers’ Purdy posts perfect passer rating

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa was not surprised to see quarterback Brock Purdy finish Sunday’s 27-14 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a perfect passer rating, saying: “He’s as good as they get.”

Purdy posted a perfect 158.3 passer rating as the Niners moved to 7-3 for the season with Sunday’s win, completing 21 of 25 passes for 333 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

That made him just the second Niners starter to do so while attempting at least 10 passes in a game after the legendary Joe Montana in 1989, while he is the first San Francisco quarterback in history to achieve the maximum rating with 20 or more attempts.

Purdy is now 14-4 across his 18 career starts, with Sunday’s performance arguably his best of the season as the Niners made it back-to-back victories.

Asked about Purdy’s display, Bosa said: “Perfect game? Wow. I’m never surprised anymore with him. He’s as good as it gets.”

Purdy himself, however, noted that a perfect passer rating didn’t necessarily mean a perfect performance, saying: “What an honour, but at the same time, I feel like there’s still some plays and stuff that I wish I had back.

“So, I’m not completely content with just that, but I thought it was a great game with the guys around me, the coaching and the playcalling, all of it. I think that’s a testament to the team, really.”

The Niners have bounced back well since seeing their 5-0 start wrecked by a three-game losing streak, crushing the Jacksonville Jaguars 34-3 in Week 10 before tightening their grip on the NFC West with Sunday’s victory.

“It’s the NFL, anything can happen on any Sunday and that’s the chip that I was talking about,” Purdy added.

“Getting back to that and proving myself on every drive, every play, that I can be the guy for this team and I have to earn it every single week at practice, meetings, wherever it may be… That’s the mindset of what I was talking about.”

The Niners now face a tough three-game stretch with a pair of divisional matchups against the Seattle Seahawks – their closest rivals in the NFC West – coming either side of a trip to Lincoln Financial Field to face the Philadelphia Eagles.
