Carolina Panthers fire GM Fitterer after 2-15 season

The Carolina Panthers have fired general manager Scott Fitterer after finishing with the NFL’s worst regular-season record at 2-15.

The move, which was confirmed by owner David Tepper in a statement on Monday, comes after the franchise also parted ways with head coach Frank Reich following a 1-10 start to the campaign.

Chris Tabor took over as interim head coach from late November but only oversaw one victory from six games at the helm, against the Atlanta Falcons on December 17.

The Panthers finished their miserable campaign with a 9-0 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, with their opponents clinching their third straight NFC South title with that victory. Carolina were also shut out in Week 17, going down 26-0 to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In Monday’s statement, Tepper said: “As we move forward with the new direction for our franchise, I have made the decision that Scott Fitterer will no longer serve as our general manager.

“I appreciate Scott’s efforts and wish the best for him and his family.”

Fitterer spent three seasons as Carolina’s general manager, with the team going 14-37 throughout his tenure.

The 50-year-old, who previously spent two decades in various roles with the Seattle Seahawks, orchestrated a trade to go from ninth overall draft pick to first in the last offseason.

Fitterer gave the Chicago Bears two first-round picks and wide receiver DJ Moore in order to select quarterback Bryce Young. That traded draft pick for this year will be first overall.

Fitterer will also be remembered for trading star running back Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers – who he helped to the NFC’s top seed this season – in October 2022, receiving second-, third- and fourth-round picks in 2023, as well as a fifth-rounder for 2024.
