The Seattle Seahawks have appointed Mike Macdonald as their new head coach.

Macdonald moves over from the Baltimore Ravens, where he was defensive co-ordinator, to replace the veteran Pete Carroll, whose long reign ended following the Seahawks’ 9-8 season.

“What an honour,” said Macdonald, who at 36 years of age will become the youngest head coach in the NFL.

“We are super excited to be here. Just getting to know [GM] John [Schneider] and the rest of the folks, the reputation of this place, what drew us here was the people. That’s why we’re here, to bring a championship back to Seattle.

“We’re going to have a lot of fun, we’re going to work our tails off, and it’s going to be an incredible ride. We’re going to be here for a long time, and we’re going to win a lot of football games.”

Macdonald impressed with the Ravens. They led the NFL in points allowed, sacks and takeaways in the 2023 season.

Seattle settled on him after holding a second interview with Detroit Lions offensive co-ordinator Ben Johnson.

Macdonald’s first job will be to assemble a coaching staff with most of Carroll’s trusted lieutenants having moved to new positions.
