OJ Simpson dies, aged 76

Former NFL star OJ Simpson has died, aged 76, his family has announced.

Simpson rose to fame as a star running back for the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers. He was named NFL MVP in 1973 and was a five-time Pro Bowl participant.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.

A successful career in punditry followed before his life changed in 1994 when he was arrested after a televised car chase with police through the streets of Los Angeles following the murder of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

He was later acquitted after a lengthy trial only to be sentenced to 33 years in prison in 2007 for a robbery on a hotel room in Las Vegas.

He was released on parole in 2017.

HIs family wrote on X this afternoon: “On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. 

“He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.”
