Durant, James, Curry and Leonard named in USA squad for Olympics

USA Basketball has named a formidable squad to take part in the Paris Olympics this summer.

The group includes three-time Olympic champion Kevin Durant as well as two-time gold medal winner LeBron James, who is also the NBA’s all-time points scorer.

Steph Curry, Kawhi Leonard and Joel Embiid will also play in Paris with the USA aiming for their fifth straight gold.

They will line up in Group C alongside Serbia, South Sudan and the winner of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Puerto Rico.

Team USA will be coached by Golden State Warriors boss Steve Kerr. He said: “My staff and I are honoured to coach this amazing group of players in our quest to win Olympic gold in Paris.

“We plan to represent USA Basketball with the utmost class and we hope to make our country proud.”

Curry, who will be an Olympic debutant if he appears, has won the NBA title four times and MVP twice under Kerr’s leadership.

Philadelphia 76ers center Embiid is yet to appear at the games and was the MVP in 2023, as well as being a seven-time NBA All-Star.

USA are the most successful team in the history of the competition, having won gold 16 times.

Argentina’s triumph in 2004 is the only occasion since 1988 when they have not been the champions.

The odds-on favourites to prevail in Paris are likely to be most closely challenged by Serbia, Canada, France and Germany, according to bookmakers.
