Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has refused to name Justin Fields as his starting quarterback for the rest of the season and is waiting on Russell Wilson to return from injury before having to make a decision.
Wilson was named the Steelers QB ahead of Week 1 after winning a training camp audition with Fields only to aggravate a calf injury on the Thursday of game week.
That opened the door for Fields and he has thrived, helping the Steelers to a 3-0 start, including a two-touchdown performance in Sunday’s 20-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

McIlroy misses out again
Asked ahead of the weekend match-up with the Indianapolis Colts if Fields had done enough to retain his place when Wilson returns, Tomlin was vague.
He said: “Sometimes in this business, there’s a myriad complex decisions that need to be made.
“I’ve learned to make them when it’s appropriate and it’s not necessary as we sit here right now.
“When Russ gets to an appropriate point of health and we have a decision to make, I’ll make it and I’ll announce it and I’ll be really transparent about it, but until then, I don’t care how many ways you guys ask me, I got no intentions of making the decision that’s unnecessary at this juncture.
“Justin has played well, and that’s exciting for him and for us, but I’m not surprised by that. And I hadn’t looked at it in terms of the decision-making because it’s not time yet.”

Tomlin also refused to divulge how close Wilson was to a return. The former Seattle Seahawks star has been inactive for each game this season and is set to be a limited participant again in today’s practice.
“We’ll know when we get there,” Tomlin said. “He’ll not only be healthy in terms of keeping himself safe, but he’ll be healthy in terms of being able to be productive and do the things that he needs to do and we need him to do.”
