Peter Laviolette has been named as the new coach of the New York Rangers, just over a month after the team parted ways with Gerard Gallant.

Gallant’s time with the Rangers came to an end in May when the team was knocked out of the Stanley Cup play-offs by the New Jersey Devils.

The Blueshirts went out in the first round after being beaten over seven games. They had initially led the series 2-0, but fell apart as the match-up went on and were on the receiving end of an embarrassing 4-0 result in the final tie.

Laviolette, who played 12 times for the Rangers during a brief NHL career at the end of the 1980s, joins after a storied NHL career that’s seen him win 752 of the 1,430 games he’s presided over.

During that time, he’s managed the New York Islanders, the Carolina Hurricanes and the Philadelphia Flyers, among others, and is one of only a handful of coaches to have made it to the Stanley Cup finals with three different teams.

The last few years have not been so kind to him, however, as he’s either failed to make it to the play-offs or failed to qualify past the first round for the last five seasons. He joins the Rangers after an unhappy stint at the Washington Capitals, who last season failed to make the play-offs for the first time since 2013/14.

Rangers thrilled with Laviolette’s arrival

Despite this, the Rangers are delighted with their appointment. “We are thrilled that Peter will be the next Head Coach of the New York Rangers,” Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury said.

“With Peter’s extensive experience as a Head Coach in the National Hockey League, as well as the success his teams have had at several levels throughout his career, we are excited about what the future holds with him leading our team.”

“I would like to welcome Peter to the New York Rangers,” added James Dolan, Executive Chairman, Madison Square Garden Sports Corp.

“Peter’s impressive resumé, which includes winning a Stanley Cup and advancing to the Final with three different teams, has made him one of the most respected coaches in the league. As we move forward in our goal to consistently contend for the Stanley Cup, I am confident that Peter is the right head coach to lead our team.”

Fans and Gallant’s bosses were understandably furious at the turnaround and in the days after the final match it became clear the manager’s days with the team were numbered.

The New York Rangers are one of hockey’s most famous teams, but success has been hard to find in recent years. They last won the Stanley Cup in the 1993/94 season, beating the Vancouver Canucks 4-3.

They came close again in 2013/14 when they made it to the Finals but lost 4-1 to the Los Angeles Kings, three of the games being agonising overtime defeats.
