Taylor lauds ‘best night of career’ after rematch win over Cameron

Katie Taylor celebrated the “best night” of her hugely decorated career as she claimed a stunning revenge victory over Chantelle Cameron to become a two-weight undisputed world champion on Saturday.

Cameron handed Taylor her first defeat in the professional game when she upset the legendary Irishwoman at the 3Arena in Dublin back in May on a majority decision, a loss that sparked rumours of retirement for the 2012 Olympic champion.

But in the very same ring on Saturday, Taylor responded to that defeat in incredible fashion, boxing her way to a majority decision to claim the WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF super-lightweight straps and further her already glittering legacy.

Already an undisputed champion at lightweight, Taylor joins Claressa Shields as the only female boxers to hold all the belts in two separate weight classes, and the 37-year-old believes Saturday was the peak of her extraordinary ring exploits so far.

“This is the best night of my career so far,” Taylor told BBC Radio 5 Live. “The first fight didn’t go my way and I’m so happy I got a second chance.

“This is what dreams are made of. Two-weight undisputed champion, this is more than a dream.

“I had a lot of pressure going into this fight. It was the longest six months waiting for the rematch. I had sleepless nights thinking about the loss.

“It was amazing support. They kept me going tonight in the latter part of the fight. I was very calm stepping in here and I’m very happy to have pulled it off.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn echoed Taylor’s sentiments, saying to DAZN: “This is the single greatest night I think I’ve witnessed in this sport.

“They doubted Katie Taylor and wrote her off. She is one of the biggest legends to ever come out of this country. You should be so proud of her. I’ve not heard one person say a bad word about this woman.

“She deserves everything. [This is] the greatest night in the history of her career.”

With both Cameron and Taylor boasting one win each against each other, naturally the talk has already started over a potential trilogy fight, with suggestions that Croke Park could be the venue of choice.

Hearn believes that fight and venue is a must, adding: “Croke Park has to happen. She’s [Taylor] done everything for this sport and this country. Next spring, summer we will create an event you will never forget.”
