Police are appealing for video footage after one person died and 21 were injured in a shooting in Missouri at Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII victory parade.

Eight victims were in immediately life-threatening condition and seven had suffered injuries that could prove life-threatening. Nine wounded children are expected to recover.

The shooting took place on the west side of Union Station, where the players had been scheduled to arrive after making their way through the city. Three suspects have been arrested, with local authorities and the FBI asking the public to share footage in a bid to identify the shooters.

“Our thoughts are with the victims and all those affected,” said an NFL statement, calling the attack “senseless” and “deeply saddening”.

“We are grateful for the quick and thorough response of law enforcement and emergency personnel.”

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was among the players to react on social media. “My heart breaks for the tragedy that happened today,” he said. “My heart goes out to everyone who came to celebrate with us and suffered.

“While the physical damage could have been far worse, mental and emotional harm would have been caused to virtually everyone present when the shots were fired.

“Despite the presence of hundreds of law enforcement officers, yet another senseless act of gun violence has occurred in the only country on the planet where they occur with a frequency that they do not occur in any other country.”

Kansas City shooting: Biden responds

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he was “praying for Kansas City”, and US president Joe Biden called on Congress to ban the sale of assault weapons and tighten restrictions around verification for people seeking to buy weapons.

“These events should shock and shame us and motivate us to action,” said Biden. “What are we waiting for? What else should we see?

“How many more families must suffer? We need to take action to combat gun violence.”
