Vontae Davis: Former NFL cornerback found dead aged 35

NFL

Two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Vontae Davis has been found dead at his grandmother’s house in Florida aged 35.

Officers were called to the residence in response to a medical call, discovering Davis’ body. No foul play was involved, a preliminary investigation found.

Davis played in successive Pro Bowls in 2014 and 2015 as part of a five-year spell with Indianapolis Colts, having begun his career with Miami Dolphins.

The 2009 first-draft pick for the Dolphins retired during a match in 2018 for Buffalo Bills, his third and final team.

“We are devastated to hear of Vontae Davis’ passing,” said a Colts statement. “He was a standout player in his six seasons with the Horseshoe but he was an even better teammate who carried a smile and positive energy every day.

“He will be deeply missed and we send our prayers to his family and loved ones.”

Colts owner Jim Irsay described himself as “extremely saddened”. “A great guy, team-mate, player,” he added. “My prayers to Vontae’s family.”

The Dolphins’ response to the news said: “We are heartbroken by the sudden passing of former Dolphins CB Vontae Davis and extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

The Bills said: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Vontae Davis. We are thinking of his friends, family, and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Among other tributes, former Colts wide receiver TY Hilton said he had spoken to Davis “a couple weeks ago.” “I sill can’t believe you’re gone,” Hilton wrote on social media.

“I don’t want to believe you’re gone. My head hurts so bad. RIP, VD.”

Reggie Wayne, who was one of Davis’ Colts team-mates and is now a coach for the team, called it a “sad day”. “We used to battle every day in practice,” he recalled.

“Sometimes it ended in a bunch of bickering and almost fights. We got each other better. It was a pleasure wearing the horseshoe with you, homie. Rest easy, Champ. Praying for your family and loved ones.”
