Dak Prescott contract: Dallas Cowboys yet to open talks with quarterback

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has revealed he is yet to hold formal talks with the team’s owner Jerry Jones over a new long-term contract.

Prescott is entering the final season of the four-year, $160million deal he penned back in 2021 – the most lucrative contract ever handed out by the franchise.

He threw for 4,516 yards and 36 touchdowns during the 2023 regular season. That latter figure was league-high tally, while only Tua Tagovailoa (4,624) and Jared Goff (4,575) had more throwing yards.

While the Cowboys edged out the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC East title, they imploded in spectacular fashion in the playoffs, Prescott throwing two picks in a 48-32 wild-card loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Prescott has not seen any movement regarding his long-term future this offseason, but he insists he is not worried about the delay.

“Honestly, I’m focused on this moment. If the talks begin, and real talks get to happen, I’m sure we’ll talk about getting that done,” Prescott said on Friday, before taking part in the Children’s Cancer Fund’s ‘A Knight to Remember’ gala.

“But right now, I’m just worried about getting better tomorrow than I am at this moment. I’m leaving it up to my agent and Jerry at this moment and when those talks begin, I’ll be more involved.

“I’ve talked to Jerry so I understand where we are, there’s not any grey area in that sense.

“I’ve been in this situation before, so it’s okay. I’m fine in any situation at that point, betting on myself or playing this year out.”

Prescott’s average annual salary of $40m puts him joint 10th among the league’s highest-paid players, with Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow having the highest average salary at $55m.

There has been speculation that any new deal for Prescott would make him the NFL’s best-paid quarterback, but he says that is not something that concerns him.

“No, I’m not trying to be the highest-paid necessarily,” Prescott said.

“We’ll wait until the negotiations begin and obviously we want to put this team in the best situation.”
