Titans fire head coach Vrabel after six seasons in charge

The Tennessee Titans have fired head coach Mike Vrabel after enduring back-to-back losing seasons, controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk confirmed on Tuesday.

The Titans finished their season with a 28-20 home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, denying their opponents a postseason place.

However, they also missed the playoffs for a second straight season after ending with a 6-11 record, finishing bottom of the AFC South one year on from going 7-10.

Tennessee’s 2023 season was their worst under Vrabel, who took charge ahead of the 2018 campaign and led them to three playoff trips, losing the AFC Championship game to the Kansas City Chiefs in January 2020.

In Tuesday’s statement, Strunk said: “Earlier today, I spoke with Mike Vrabel and told him about my decision to make a change at head coach. As I told coach Vrabel, this decision was as difficult as any I’ve made as controlling owner.

“Anyone who has ever met him knows how passionate and genuine he is, and he’s been a strong supporter of the Nashville community. We wish Mike, Jen, and the Vrabel family nothing but the best in the future.

“As the NFL continues to innovate and evolve, I believe the teams best positioned for sustained success will be those who empower an aligned and collaborative team across all football functions.

“I believe the Tennessee Titans can and will be a premier National Football League franchise. It’s what our fans deserve, and there will be hard decisions along the way.

“I will never shy away from acknowledging that I have unapologetically high expectations for the football team and every aspect of the Titans organization.

“With a coaching search, enviable cap space, and a top-10 draft position, this offseason is as important as any in our history. I’m excited for the weeks and months ahead. We will meet the moment.”

All-Pro running back Derrick Henry, who looks set to depart upon the expiration of his contract in Tennessee, was surprised by the franchise’s decision to dispense with Vrabel’s services, telling The Athletic: “Coach Vrabel is a leader of men.

“He is a great coach and teacher. I know he will get another opportunity right away. I look forward to it.”
